What Does "IP" Mean?
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit shows protection against solids such as dust and sand (0–6). The second digit shows protection against water (0–9). Higher is better.
IP65 Explained
- 6 = completely dust-tight
- 5 = protected against water jets from any direction
IP65 is ideal for wall-mounted outdoor lights, entrances, car porches and facades. It handles dust storms, rain, garden sprinklers and the coastal humidity of Muscat and Sur.
IP68 Explained
- 6 = completely dust-tight
- 8 = protected against continuous immersion in water
IP68 is the choice for lights that may sit in water or be exposed to heavy, constant moisture: pool edges, fountains, ground-level garden lighting and flexible strips used outdoors.
Which Rating Do You Need in Oman?
- Villa walls, gates, entrances: IP65 is enough.
- Gardens near sprinklers: IP65 minimum, IP67/68 for ground level.
- Pools, fountains, water features: IP68 only.
- Salalah during khareef: IP65 or higher for all outdoor fittings.
- Indoor rooms: any rating works, but higher ratings resist dust better.
Oman-Specific Tips
- Heat: choose metal bodies for fittings in direct sun. Plastic can fade and become brittle.
- Dust: the first digit matters as much as the second. Always look for a 6.
- Salt air: in coastal areas, wipe fittings occasionally to prevent salt build-up.
- Controllers and plugs: even if a light strip is waterproof, its controller and USB or power adapter usually are not. Keep them indoors or in a covered spot.
